A Powerful Combination
We believe that much of the success of the Gray Wolf program
is the powerful combination of wilderness expeditions and long-term
residential treatment. Putting the lessons learned in therapy into practice
in the real world is a key component of the Gray Wolf recovery program.
Our residents do this each day in their jobs, schooling, and
community service.
Through our trek program, they also have a unique opportunity
to apply their sober life skills on wilderness expeditions. They
gain a tremendous sense of accomplishment and self-esteem in exploring
new places and meeting new challenges. Our counselors are skilled
at making the most of these opportunities for both group and
individual therapy, and for reinforcing the recovery work
that we do in our residential program. A Powerful Combinatio

Our Environment
Gray Wolf is located in the Pacific Northwest, which is well known
for its abundance of recreational opportunities. The mountains and
lakes of the Olympic and North Cascade National Parks, the waters
of Puget Sound, and the islands of the San Juans provide virtually
unlimited areas for hiking, backpacking, sailing, kayaking, and canoeing.
Wilderness is a place where nature prevails and situations and their
consequences are real. On treks, wilderness can be used as
a tool to help foster self reliance, judgment, and responsibility
for our actions. Its simplicity encourages us to take the time
for reflection, growth, and healing. Being away from the distractions
of day-to-day life makes it easier to build relationships and strengthen
bonds and provides an opportunity to gain new perspectives
No Experience Needed
The outdoor program at Gray Wolf is designed for novices. Most of
our residents have had no prior camping, paddling, sailing, or wilderness
experience. Any necessary gear is provided by Gray Wolf, so no special
purchases are required. Our treks are led by highly trained outdoor
professionals who are skilled instructors and counselors. They enthusiastically
share their love of the mountains and the sea with our residents.
Safety
Risk is an inherent part of wilderness travel, and we embrace it
as a part of the learning process. Recognizing and managing
risk can be used as a tool for personal growth and is an integral
part to the safety and health of our staff and residents. Gray
Wolf has an excellent safety record and meets or exceeds national
standards in outdoor programming. We are accredited by the Association
for Experiential Education, the same organization that accredits
leading outdoor schools such as Outward Bound and the National Outdoor
Leadership School.
