Family Trek: Sailing Aboard the Schooners Martha and Alcyone

June 18-22, 2008

Come sailing on two of the most beautiful wooden schooners in the Northwest!  We’ll  spend five days exploring Washington’s ruggedly scenic San Juan Islands while working as an integral part of the crew of the schooners Martha and Alcyone.  From listening to the morning weather report to plan the day’s destination to hoisting sails and taking your turn at the helm, you’ll experience a hands-on sailing opportunity.
Characterized by dark evergreen forests, rocky shorelines that meet the water, and flat farmland, the glacially carved San Juan Islands provide the perfect backdrop to learn a new skill while leaving the boundaries of your daily routine behind.  With only six crew aboard each vessel, an intimate environment results where teamwork and open communication become essential components of the trip.  We’ll travel as two separate groups during the day and reconvene in the evenings for dinner and a group check-in.

Registration Deadline
: 30 days prior to departure (first come, first reserved!)

Trip Description: The schooner Martha and Alcyone are Port Townsend based sail training vessels that are fully equipped for extended sails throughout Puget Sound, San Juan Islands and Canadian waters.  Days will begin with an optional cold plunge in the icy waters of the Puget Sound and end with a hearty community meal in the cozy mahogany interior of the boat.  This trip is designed for alumni and their families and is conducted in typical GWR fashion.  It is structured around learning a new skill while exploring a unique environment, with a focus on having fun and learning more about yourself and the other trek participants.
We’ll depart directly from Port Townsend on Wednesday June 18 at 9 am and return in the afternoon on Sunday June 22.  We’ll travel north to the San Juan Islands and choose our route daily depending on the prevailing wind and weather conditions.  Crew will assist in the daily chores that range from assisting in the galley to swabbing the deck.  Meals will be provided on the boat.  There are several comfortable sleeping berths, but you can choose to sleep out on the deck on starry nights.

Physical Activity: Exertion levels will be moderate due to the nature of sailing a tall ship.  No experience is required, only a willing attitude and energy.  All participants must complete a medical history form to attend.  If you have restrictions relative to physical activity, please check with your physician before the trip.

Logistics and Schedule:  All participants must arrive in Port Townsend prior to the 9am departure on June 18.

Clothing and Equipment: If you are in need of any clothing and gear from the Trek Center for the trip, it is possible to check out these items. Please contact the Equipment Coordinator, Chase Glenn, with a list of clothing you will need along with sizing so we can pack this gear prior to your departure.  We have rain jacket/pants, wind jacket/pants for rent, and long underwear, socks, fleece hats, and Patagonia fleece (with GWR logo) for purchase.

Travel Arrangements: If you need assistance with flights or ground transportation from Seattle (SeaTac Airport, www.seatac.org), Jean’s House of Travel in Port Townsend can help: (800) 895-2688 or (360) 385-6250.

Cost: $950 per person. Includes five days of sail training, accommodation and meals aboard the boat.  The tuition does not cover lodging and meals in Port Townsend or transportation to and from the airport. Please contact us if you are in need of financial assistance to make your involvement possible for this trip.

Deposit: Tuition In Full is due at time of Registration

Lodging: If you require lodging the night before the trek you can either lodge in town (check www.ptguide.com) or at the GWR Cottage if it’s available. Please contact us if you would like to stay at the Cottage so we can confirm space for you on needed dates.

Trek Risks: As is always the case with outdoor adventures, there will be inherent risks associated with the trip’s activities. These risks cannot be eliminated without destroying the fundamental qualities of the activities. You will be assuming all risks if you choose to participate. Also, you should verify with your family physician or other health care provider that you will be able to participate in this trek without putting your health at risk.
