By David Lewis, Executive Director

As many of you know, the Wolf's Den is an aftercare referral option geared primarily for Gray Wolf graduates who have not only successfully completed our residential program, but have assimilated significantly into the community. This generally takes the form of full-time paid employment, education, or a combination of both. The parents of our graduates are particularly pleased to see this level of stability and structure in their son's lives, and find the Wolf's Den an affordable, high-quality setting to help secure this emerging commitment to sobriety and consistency.

Until recently, the Wolf's Den was located on the Gray Wolf property, next door to the main residence. We're pleased to announce that in December 2001, Gray Wolf Ranch opened the doors to a new and expanded Wolf's Den. This 2,500 square-foot, refurbished 19th century home is centrally located in the heart of Port Townsend's uptown district. We acquired this property after the Board of Directors determined that an increasing demand for the Wolf's Den system was exceeding our capacity. The house itself has considerably more room than our earlier accommodations. With five bedrooms, three full baths, a dining area, living room, kitchen, and carriage house, it will easily house eight Gray Wolf graduates. It's proximity to the Port Townsend business district will allow our young men more access to public transportation as well as to local businesses and events.

In addition to the changes in accommodations, there have been programmatic changes to the Wolf's Den system as well. In November of last year, Gray Wolf was accredited with an outpatient license through the Washington State Division of Alcohol and Substance Abuse. This allows us the opportunity to staff a part-time, licensed, Chemical Dependency Professional (CDP) within the new Wolf's Den. With an office there, the CDP will be able to provide outpatient services to our Wolf's Den participants, spending more than four clinical hours per week with each occupant, including two group therapy sessions and one individual counseling session. Having the CDP's office in the building will also allow for an increased clinical presence on the premises.

All of us at Gray Wolf are excited about these developments within our Wolf's Den services. We thank our referents and the parents of our residents for giving us the input that ultimately led us to consider and implement these changes. We expect you'll find the new Wolf's Den to be an impressive extension of our services as we continue to provide the best adolescent and young adult residential care available.
