Pathfinder Spring 2004

by Peter Boechenstien, GWR President

As we move into the spring of '04, I find myself thinking about transitions. In the last 12 months, we have had over 90 young men enter our program. Our new residents always bring fresh energy and new challenges as they face the transition of meeting life without the use of mood-altering chemicals. Our role at Gray Wolf is to teach our residents how to build relationships in early recovery that will be the foundation for their newly sober lives. It is an ever-evolving process that is in constant motion. I admire the courage and strength that these young men demonstrate on a daily basis, and I am in awe of the powerful changes that we witness and are sometimes privileged to participate in.

Peter B.

As an organization we also experience our share of transitions here at Gray Wolf. As I reflect over the last year, I find myself getting excited at the changes we have made. The most notable internally is our new program director Woody Bernas. He hit the ground running last spring and has been doing a terrific job at the helm. Yea, Woody! Our clinical team has welcomed physiologist Mollie Hinkle, and our clinical supervisor Kris Kampf continues to keep us all in line. We have built a new state-of-the-art trek center, said goodbye to Alex Borton, our trusted Trek Program Manager, and are welcoming Jimbo Buickerood (who you can read more about in this issue). We have conducted over ten resident treks and three alumni treks, including one father-son trek this past fall. Our community service program continues to blossom in the hands of Mardella, and the education program at Gray Wolf is also thriving with more students than ever before. We were awarded another three-year CARF accreditation as well as a three-year AEE accreditation for our wilderness program.

As we move into spring '04, I look forward to welcoming our new project, BADd HABIT, on-line. As always, we will continue to provide the highest level of service to our residents and alumni, their families, and our referents. I look forward to hearing from all of you--we couldn’t do what we do with out you. I wish you the very best as we move into spring and summer…keep in touch!

Gray Wolf Ranch entry

We're pleased to report that Gray Wolf Ranch has once again been approved by the Commission for the Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities (CARF). This is the second consecutive three-year accreditation that we have been awarded for our residential alcohol and drug addiction treatment program.

CARF is an independent, nonprofit accrediting body whose mission is to promote the quality, value, and optimal outcomes of services through a consultative accreditation process that centers on enhancing the lives of the person served. Founded in 1966, CARF establishes consumer-focused standards to help organizations measure and improve the quality of their programs and services.

The three-year accreditation from CARF is the highest level that they award. It certifies that Gray Wolf
